On your last day in this hidden gem of a German town, the inn owner insists you try a local drink and is making it fresh right in front of you: whatever he’s crushing gives off a strong scent of currants and lemon. He also insists you take it with you on a stroll along the terrace, where the sun warms the fennel leaves growing in the garden and the heavy heads of the roses lining the sidewalk. Steps take you down into welcome, balsam-scented shade provided by the firs.
